The Agafay is a desert of pale stone and rolling hills rather than sand, about 40 minutes south-west of Marrakech, with the snow-capped Atlas on the horizon. Its closeness to the city makes it the easiest desert landscape to reach without an overnight trip. You ride camels across the ridges as the light drops and the hills turn from grey to gold, led on foot by local handlers. The ride is slow and needs no experience. Afterwards there is mint tea at a desert camp, and time to watch the sun go down behind the Atlas. If you cannot spare the two days needed to reach the Sahara dunes, this is the closest thing to a desert evening within easy reach of Marrakech.
