One-day excursion from Marrakech to Ouarzazate and Ait Ben Haddou
About this experience
This full day crosses the High Atlas by the Tizi n Tichka pass, climbing to over 2,200 metres on a road of switchbacks with views back across the mountains, then descends into the pre-Saharan south. The main stop is the fortified village of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site of packed-earth kasbahs stacked against a hillside above the Ounila river. It is one of the most recognisable places in Morocco and has stood in for ancient cities in many films. A local guide walks you up through the ksar to the granary at the summit. The day continues to Ouarzazate, known as the gateway to the desert, with time at the Taourirt Kasbah and a look at the film studios that gave the town its nickname. It is a long day on the road, but it covers the most dramatic scenery within reach of Marrakech.
