Essaouira sits on the Atlantic about two and a half hours west of Marrakech, and the change is immediate: sea wind, gulls, blue fishing boats and whitewashed walls instead of red earth and heat. The medina is a UNESCO World Heritage site, laid out on a grid that makes it far easier to walk than the souks of Marrakech. You can follow the ramparts of the Skala de la Ville along the sea wall, watch the day catch come in at the port, and eat grilled sardines straight off the fire. The town has long been a centre for thuya wood carving, and the workshops are open to visitors. The drive out passes through argan country, where the trees grow only in this part of Morocco, with a stop at a womens cooperative that presses the oil by hand.
